Connections and messaging

How connections and messages work

Short answer

Nobody can message you out of the blue. A conversation can only start between two people who were both checked in at the same event and who both said yes to each other afterwards.

How a connection is made

  1. Go to an event and get checked in at the door. Only people the door checked in can connect, so an RSVP on its own is not enough.
  2. After the event, open the You tab. While an event is waiting for your feedback, you see a row called How was it?. Tap it and pick the event.
  3. Give the event a rating and tap Done. The other questions are optional. If the event had a venue, you are asked And the place?, which you can answer or tap Skip this.
  4. On Who did you meet?, tap Yes next to anyone you would like to see again, or Not now.
  5. If they also say yes about you, you are connected. You both find out at that point, and only then.

Nobody is told what you picked. If someone says Not now about you, or never answers, you are not told that either.

Send a message

  1. Open the You tab.
  2. Under people you met, tap a face to open your conversation with that person (or their profile, if you have not talked yet), or tap messages to see all your conversations.
  3. To start a conversation with a connection you have not talked to yet, on Messages tap the people button (Everyone you have met), then tap the message button next to their name.

What messaging does not do

  • There are no read receipts, no last-seen and no typing indicator. Whether you have read something stays private to you.
  • Messages are not deleted on a timer.
  • To delete one of your own messages, press and hold it, then tap Delete for everyone. It is removed for both of you and cannot be undone. You cannot delete the other person's messages.
  • Tap the information button at the top of a conversation (About this conversation) to see where you met.

Turn connections off

Open You, then Settings, then Privacy, and turn off Let people you met connect with you. While it is off, nobody can connect with you after an event.

Common problems

  • Nobody is listed on "Who did you meet?" Only people who were checked in at the same event and who allow connections appear. People you have blocked, or who blocked you, never appear.
  • "You're no longer connected to this person." The connection has ended, and you cannot send new messages in that conversation.
  • "Your messaging is restricted." A restriction is on your account. See what happens after a report for how to read it and appeal.
  • "Slow down a moment." You sent several messages very quickly. Wait a little and send again.
  • "That didn't go through. Check your connection and send again." Your words stay in the box. Sending again is safe: the same message is not delivered twice.
